Lund University (LU) / Sweden
Lund University (LU) was founded 1666. The University has developed to be one of Northern Europe’s biggest Universities (ca. 30 000 students and 6000 staff). The University has 8 faculties: Law, Medicine, Humanities/ Theology, Social Science, Science/ Mathematics, Economics and Engineering (these latter two have a semi-autonomous status, being respectively Lund School of Economic Research and Lund Institute of Technology). There are some smaller, autonomous centers, one of these being Learning Lund (LL), coordinating research on learning in LU. The Department of Education belongs to the Faculty of Social Science. The Department is training students in educational research, and is also participating in two programmes together with other Departments: Human Resource Management and Leisure Studies. Beside of this, the Department is teaching master courses within the Master Program in Pedagogics in Professional Settings. The research profile of the Department has three areas: working life research, higher education research (with a focus on science and technology, in collaboration with the Lund Institute of Technology). The Department has two full professors, four associate professors, and a number of assistant professors and lecturers. Staff from the department is involved in LL projects.
The participant from the Department of Education is Dr. Piotr Szybek, associate professor. He has been researching science education on primary, secondary and tertiary level. The work on the primary and secondary level was in part done within the framework of the Eudist project (Project 106278-CP-1-DE-Comenius-2.1) from which a report in book form is forthcoming. The project has been reported at the 2003 and 2005 ESERA conferences and a report published by the Department of Education, Lund University (2005). From 1998 – 2000, he has co-authored the Swedish National Science Curriculum (Kursplan 2000, NO-ämnena). He also coordinated a network of science educators who designed an in-service training programme to assist science teachers in the implementation of that curriculum. Presently, he is participating in a project investigating affordances created by Engineering Education in relation to the professional careers of engineers. He is also leading courses in science education for staff from Science and Engineering Faculties. He is coordinating the project ESDiL (Education for Sustainable Development in Lund), involving staff from various departments of Lund University. Piotr Szybek is member of the ESERA, NERA, PESGB and the Swedish National Network for Curriculum Research and Development. He has been working as reviewer for the Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research and the journal Science and Education.
