Operationalizing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education through the AcaSTEMy Project
Abstract
The Erasmus+ acaSTEMy Teacher Academy project seeks to operationalize a future-oriented approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teacher education that connects disciplinary learning with authentic societal challenges. This conceptual paper synthesizes research-informed principles underpinning the project and explains how they are translated into teacher professional learning. The framework positions integrated STEM education as problem-centered learning that combines scientific inquiry, engineering design, mathematical reasoning, digital technologies, and responsible societal decision-making. It brings together transversal and transformative competences, sustainability education, systems thinking, digital confidence, strategic thinking, and career awareness within a three-stage model that moves from socio-scientific relevance through inquiry and conceptual learning to reflection and evidence-informed action. These principles are operationalized through teacher-education modules, micro-credentials, job shadowing, mobility, and professional-learning networks. The paper argues that the main contribution of the acaSTEMy project lies not in proposing a single universal teaching model but in providing a coherent and adaptable framework for translating contemporary STEM-education priorities into teacher development and classroom practice across diverse European contexts. It also identifies implementation challenges related to disciplinary traditions, resources, institutional capacity, and the need for longer-term evaluation.
